Launched on March 4, 2026, the SkyRover S1 is the first sub-249g drone sold under $300 to combine forward obstacle avoidance, a Sony 1/2" sensor with a three-axis mechanical gimbal, and 4K/60fps video. The positioning is direct: delivering entry-level DJI specifications at less than a third of the DJI Mini 4 Pro's price.

Camera and Stabilization

The Sony CMOS 1/2" sensor captures photos at up to 48 MP with RAW support, and records video in 4K at 60fps or 1080p at 120fps — the latter useful for slow motion. Fixed aperture is f/2.8. The three-axis mechanical gimbal compensates for in-flight vibrations and abrupt movements, delivering stabilized footage without additional digital processing.

The camera quality is credible for the price. Third-party tests place it between the DJI Mini 2 SE (1/2.3" sensor, no obstacle avoidance) and DJI Mini 4 Pro (1/1.3" sensor, omnidirectional avoidance) in terms of daytime image quality.

Real-World Performance vs. Manufacturer Claims

Like most emerging brands, the SkyRover S1's published specifications require interpretation:

  • Range: The 12 km manufacturer claim relies on ideal RF conditions. Third-party testing in typical urban/suburban environments found effective control range closer to 1.5 km before signal degradation.
  • Flight time: 40 minutes is measured in windless laboratory conditions. Real-world endurance is approximately 25–30 minutes in calm conditions, closer to 20 minutes in moderate wind.

These caveats are typical for the price point — the DJI Mini 2 SE similarly advertises 31 minutes and delivers 22–26 in practice.

Obstacle Avoidance: Forward Only

Forward-only obstacle avoidance provides some protection against the most common collision scenario (flying into an object in front of the drone) but offers no protection from above, below, or the sides. New pilots should still operate conservatively in obstacle-dense environments.

The SkyRover S1 makes sense as a first drone for casual recreational flyers who want to learn the hobby at low financial risk. For serious photography or commercial use, the DJI Mini 4 Pro remains the validated choice.
